Mitigating Heat in South Mountain Village

Regional Analysis - South Phoenix, Arizona

Urban Heat is highly prominent in South Mountain Village. It has a dangerous impact on citizens, especially those with high heat vulnerability, sensitivity and exposure. This includes “negative effects on health and comfort, energy costs, air quality, water availability and quality, ecological services, and recreation” (Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, ASU).

Ed Pastor Transit Center - Site Plan

This site contains a lower percentage of local residents who own a car, a lack of structural and ‘living’ shade,’ and a lack of mobile accessibility, all contributing to higher heat vulnerability scores within the area. Resultantly, this project aims to be a multi-functional and multi-modal ‘cool spot,’ transit center and land-use hub for local residents and visitors alike.
